11:24PM - School Stuff

Hey, so, like, school started two weeks ago! I guess I should post about my classes, huh? In my defense, I was SICK last weekend. Like, dying. I could not even live journal.

5:39PM - Fic: Compass and Knife (Swordspoint, Alec/Richard)

Title: Compass and Knife
Author: Brigdh
Ratings/Warnings: PG; vague death-by-sword
Notes: Written as a Stocking Stuffer for Thornsmoke in Yuletide 2007. Kyros is based liberally on my memories of Cyprus. Title from John Gorka's The Gypsy Life.

4:25PM - Fic: The Romans Call It Stoicism (Meine Liebe, Naoji/Ludwig)

Title: The Romans Call It Stoicism
Author: Brigdh
Ratings/Warnings: PG; vague illusions to sex, war.
Notes: This assumes the anime takes place in 1935, which I'm not sure is canon or fanon, though I've seen it several places. Also, France actually won the silver in the 1936 Summer Olympics, but I assumed they might not mind sharing with a fictional country. The line Naoji quotes in the last section is, of course, from the Buddha. Written for White Aster as part of Yuletide 2007.

But now it's January , which clearly means I need to get started on all those year-round-up posts. First off, books!

11:12PM - Yuletide! Yay!

Yuletide finished! And uploaded!

I was really unsure if I'd make it this year, but hooray, I managed my time. And now for the meme everyone's doing. Ganked from [info]ravenbell most recently:

If you had me under your command and could make me write anything-- fanfic or original fic, regardless of whether or not I know the fandom or if anybody even writes fic in that fandom and no matter how crack-addled it might be,what would you love to see me write?

3:23PM - Things

I have finished my last paper of the semester, given all the presentations I need to give, and graded all the tests I need to grade (though undergraduates have not yet stopped emailing me to ask when I will be in the office so they can come make things up). Yay!

My Yuletide story is not yet begun. I have 32 and a half hours to write it. Ahh!

Also, people should leave me their address for holiday cards here, even if you've given me your address for cards in previous years. Because I am not good at keeping track of things like that.

And how is your day, everyone?

1:32PM - Silly memes! Because I am amused.

From [info]chiasmus: Go to the Wikipedia home page and click random article. That is your band's name.
Click random article again; that is your album name.
Click random article 15 more times; those are the tracks on your album.

Band Name: Midian
Apparently we are either a goth band or a middle eastern one.

Album Name: Favorite Ludwigsburg
That... actually does sound like an album title. For a Bulgarian band.

Track Listing:
1. Riverside Company
(Hee!)
2. Islamic University in Uganda
(This song is either a deeply serious new-age thing, or something inspired by Jonathan Coulter.)
3. Nick Ayers
4. Esther McCoy
(This pair of songs are either love songs, or ballads about cowboys, guessing from the names.)
5. Santiago Bernabéu Yeste
(This is my band's tango.)
6. Mingevannet
(And then, of course, the obligatory weird Icelandic song.)
7. Chania International Airport
(This sounds like a Mountain Goats song about breakups. Maybe it goes with the cowboy songs.)
8. Visions of Cody
(And then the wistful, 'I miss him' song.)
9. Homer Goes to College
(And then, um. Yeah.)
10. UTC+4:30
(A instrumental techno song.)
11. Stade de la Frontière
(A French song. Why not?)
12. The Clink
(Our cowboy rebels, at the end of their story.)
13. Las Vegas Academy
(Clearly a revision of our top hit, 'Homer Goes to College'.)
14. Fencing at the 1920 Summer Olympics
(Another song about the Riverside boys. Maybe this is an AU of them.)
15. Washington County, Illinois
(A slow, sad song for the ending.)

I'd listen to it!

4:02PM - Holiday Cards!

It is that time of year, when the radios play the same five freaking Christmas carols endlessly and all stores become sites of mass panic and, most appallingly (well, if you're me) it gets cold and sometimes even snows. But! There is joy nonetheless, in the form of chocolate and candy and cookies and eggnog and pumpkin pie and peppermint canes and etc. And also cards.

If you would like a card from [info]rm and I (and you know you do), comment below with your address! Comments are screened. You may also send me an email at brigdh at gmail, if you do not trust the Russian LJ.

3:57PM - The Golden Compass

I got to see a special showing of The Golden Compass last night! Yay! I was so excited to see this movie; I first read the books back when I actually was the age they're targeted at, when I was 12 or 13. Well, the first two; by the time the third one came out I was a bit older, and have vivid memories of not sleeping a whole night to tear through it.

Not really spoilers, since it has the same plot as the book, but if you want to see without having heard anyone else's reactions )

9:17PM - A list.

Things to love about living in New York: Astor Place is a wide intersection, with a flat island in the middle, surrounded by relatively tall, old buildings. Most of the buildings are facing Astor Place, creating a sense of a sort of cup or valley walled on four of five sides with tall canyons. Today when I was walking across it, in the middle of the afternoon with bright light and plenty of people and cars rushing about, a man was playing a jazz version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on a saxaphone. He had somehow managed to place himself where the walls of a building where broadcasting the music, making it loud enough to fill Astor Place and here long before and after you could see, even with the noise of traffic and people.

Things to hate about living in New York: Later this afternoon, I attempted to go to a talk being given by one of my professors. 50 minutes later, and still over 40 blocks away from my subway stop (not to mention, you know, finding the building and then the room within it), the subway train I was on broke, not only forcing me to get off but blocking that line for other trains to come up. The express trains on the same line were so packed (it was rush hour) that it took three of them stopping at the station before I could manage to get on. At this point, I was 20 minutes late for an hour long talk, and was clearly not getting to the event anytime soon, so I gave up.

Random things which I am not sure to attribute to New York or my own luck: Leaving the subway station, I planned on catching a bus and going home. I breifly confused East and West when coming up out of the station, and walked a block in the wrong direction. Turning around, I heard someone call my name, and looked around to see M, a fellow grad student. "What are you doing up here?" he said, so I explained about the subway. "You're on my block!" he said. "You have to come home with me and help me eat the end of my Thanksgiving leftovers." And so I did.

11:29AM - Links!

I haven't even been able to post, and yet people are making nice things for me!

[info]ranalore wrote A Ghostly Galleon, which is a gorgeous, lyrical take on PotC and 'The Highwayman' post. You absolutely should go read it, because it is lovely and I adore it.

And [info]sammywhatammy took a line from one of my stories, A Better Fate Than Wisdom, and made a stunning piece of art from it. I feel so special!

People are nice. And make very cool things, which you should check out.

8:21PM - Imaginary Beasts Book #05 Review

[info]imaginarybeasts is "a bi-monthly webzine dedicated to original fiction of the oneshot variety". The theme for this book was "ghost story", and I think it turned out some particularly excellent stories. My favorites:

The Haunting of the Hell House on the Hill by [info]hazard_us. OMG! So funny! I usually do not think of ghost stories as making me howl with laughter, but this one did. I'm always terribly impressed with people who can write humor well anyway, as I can't.

The Tiger's Name by [info]shirasakura. Also not a ghost story in the usual sense of the word, but a lovely and delicate story nonetheless, and one that really seems to get the details about grief and growing up just right.

Love and Hunting by [info]thornsmoke (an author who also has some wonderful Swordspoint stories, so I was glad to see her participating in this). A sci-fi ghost story, which may seem like a weird combination, but works brilliantly here. The characters are vivid and fully-detailed, and the relationship between them is so beleiveable and subtle and well-written. This story went places that I didn't expect it to go, but I like it all the better for that. This one wins my 'if you only read one story' for this issue.

The Silent City by [info]tarigwaemir. A story set in historical China, with the ghost of the city. I love the style of this one; it feels faint as watercolors and soft as distant music, which is really the perfect tone for its story.

That's the Way It Is by [info]rei_kurasaki. This one's set in historical Japan, and tells a fairly basic ghost story. It's very well-written, and incredibly enjoyable to read. But the real appeal of this one, is in how it makes the everyday the horror of the story, and the ghost the escape from it. That twist has really made it linger in my mind after I'd read it.

The art this time was also very good. I recommend:
Skulls by [info]xmen. Scary!
redredred by [info]rakugaking. Creepy!
The Park by [info]le_gris. Cute!

You can read all of the stories and look at all of the art here and, as always, my best recommendation is that you do so. The next book's theme will be Fairy Tales, and you can sign up at this post (locked to members of the community).

7:00PM - Linkblogging

Yuletide sign-ups are open! Best ficathon of the year. You have until the 18th, so be sure to join in and play with everyone else.

CUTEST BABY MONKEY EVER.

Lol Secretz: Lol_catz and Post Secret, two great tastes that taste great together.

World Cat Libraries.org This is my new favorite website. It searches through all nearby libraries for whatever book you put in. So much easier than trying to go to ten or so seperate library websites in an effort to track down some obscure volume I need for research.

Turning All Manhattan Into a Broadway Stage. A really interesting NY Times article and video.

Someone other than me wrote some Swordspoint stories! Always a cause for celebration.

I feel strange, if just because last year it took so long to figure out where I'd be doing field work, and it's still so early in this year. But! This is pretty exciting.
